Iranian government believes the new movement of Google is planned for developing and improving the surveillance tools produced by this company. Google-owned Motorola Mobility has recently acquired Viewdle, a Ukrainian firm that makes facial recognition technology.
“This is a new cyber threat. Google is going to improve its facial recognition part of its developed surveillance tools by acquiring Viewdle.” According to a website closed to IRGC (Army of the Guardians of the Islamic Revolution).
Base on published reports Google has paid between $30 million to $45 million for buying this technology. However Google had intended to develop its IOS and Android applications using facial recognition technology. In this way users can automatically tag the pictures of friends. By the way Iran’s IRGC is not happy with this movement by Google and call it a new ‘threat’. Previously IRGC repeated the same claim against Facebook when the company acquired Israeli-based Face.com, which also makes facial recognition software.
Iranian government blocked most of the services offered by Google in order to show their hatred over anti-Islam movie. This action raised many criticisms against government and finally they forced to unblock the Google-powered services.
