Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the president of Islamic Republic of Iran, has called for improvement of ties between Iran and the United States in his recent trip to New York. Many analysts and hard liner politicians have criticized Ahmadinejad for his offer. They believe only Iran’s Supreme Leader Sayyed Ali Hosseini Khamenei has enough power to manage ties between these two nations.
“Direct negotiation with Iran was one of the major goals of the officials of the United States during the last two decades. When Mahmoud Ahmadinejad offered the other side to improve the bilateral ties, Barack Obama and other American politicians didn’t react to his offer. So why didn’t they express their happiness?” said Hossein Shariatmadari, editor in chief of Kayhan newspaper.
“According to the constitutions of Islamic Republic of Iran, determining the policies of Iran against major countries is a duty of Supreme Leader. To be honest Mahmoud Ahmadinejad doesn’t have any power to call for improvement of ties between Iran and the United States. Ahmadinejad’s offer could be a golden score for the United States if it had a support from Ali Khamenei. So Americans politicians didn’t react to Ahmadinejad’s speech because they know the politic rules of Islamic Republic of Iran.” Hossein Shariatmadari added.
There are currently no formal diplomatic relations between Iran and the United States.
